Young widow’s anger reshapes her dream for the city

Last month, as Anna Sowers faced graduate school final exams, the calendar pointed to an even more dreaded date: June 1, the first anniversary of the attack that put her husband into a coma and led to his death. Another tidal wave of grief, questions and anger was on its way.
The 28-year-old newlywed became a widow March 25, 10 months after Zach Sowers was beaten during a robbery near their Patterson Park row house.
“I am so mad at this city. Here in Baltimore, the criminals run the city,” Anna Sowers said bitterly.
“A lot of it is, ‘for the grace of God go I,’” she said about someone else being attacked in Canton. “Zach and I represented a lot of the young, urban professional couples in this area who are trying to make it better. And then I hear about this young girl getting mugged—and I want to move out.”
Sowers is working on Zach’s Law — legislation that would allow prosecutors to levy murder charges while a victim lies in a near-death state. Her husband’s attackers can’t be charged with murder under the terms of a December plea agreement, an outcome that enrages Sowers.
Margaret Burns, spokeswoman for Baltimore State’s Attorney Patricia Jessamy, called Sowers courageous but questioned the widow’s refusal to order an autopsy. Prosecutors called evidence slim — “a partial fingerprint from [the main attacker] and no eyewitnesses at the scene.”
Burns expressed doubts about Zach Sowers’ brain injuries, saying neurologists told prosecutors that overall, the injuries were inconsistent with those of a beating victim.
“The truth of the matter is, Zach’s injury was on one side of this face, and he looked like a sleeping baby when he arrived” at the hospital, Burns told Exhibit A. “The injuries were not consistent with this horrible pummeling—it appeared that when he fell down, he had collapsed after being hit. We know he was kicked, he fell and hit his head, he fell between two cars. He probably injured something in the fall or he had a pre-existing condition. There was no evidence of the vicious beating, no evidence of stomping.”
Burns added: “We had not wanted to go against this poor woman. Everything she says to you is not 100 accurate. He is gone and the opportunity to have questions answered was ruined by not having an autopsy.”
Walking home from a bar, Zach Sowers was robbed of his watch, phone and wallet by four city teens. Police say Trayvon Ramos, 16, was the main attacker. He, Eric Price, 16, Arthur Jeter Jr., 17, and Wilburt Martin, 19, all were charged with attempted first-degree murder and robbery.
Price, Jeter and Martin pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Ramos. They received 30-year prison sentences, with all but eight years suspended. Ramos pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted murder and robbery and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
During last year’s mayoral race, the attack was termed another symbol of the city’s struggle with race, crime and violence. The victim was a white professional; his attackers were young African-American males.
The couple met as high school students in their hometown of Frederick. They moved to Baltimore in their early 20s to begin professional lives. They married on Oct. 20, 2006, in Mexico. They bought a house near the Patterson Theatre on Eastern Avenue. They believed in the city.
These days, Anna Sowers has little peace. She deals almost daily with the anxiety and depression most crime victims hold, residue of a life-altering smackdown that, she says, too many in Baltimore have gone through.
Sterling Clifford, spokesman for Mayor Sheila Dixon and Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III, said last month: “I can’t imagine what it would feel like to be victimized the way Anna Sowers and her family and husband were. But great strides have been made in the last year in reducing violent crime in the city of Baltimore. There’s a lot of work to be done — no one disputes that — but there is less violence in the city today than there was a year ago. These are small steps forward, but they are forward.”
Last year, the city recorded 282 homicides and more than 600 nonfatal shootings. But homicides are down so far this year. As of May 19, there had been 76 homicides in Baltimore, compared to 109 on that date last year, according to the city police department.
Meanwhile, Anna Sowers is raising money to open the Zach Sowers Brain Trauma Research Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She wants to go to law school and become a prosecutor. Being a victim led her to that path, she said.
She often dreams of Zach lying in a hospital bed having seizures.
She holds open contempt for Ramos, whom she faced in court.
“He gave me a look like he didn’t even care,” she said. “I looked him in the eye and felt like I was looking at the devil.”
As for the rest of her life, Sowers is uncertain.
“I can only wait and see. There are a lot of emotions I go through every day — angry, stressed out, all those things,” she said. “One day I hope to be near people who don’t know about my past and it will feel a little more free. But wherever I go, Zach will always be watching over me.” {EXA}

Does Margaret Burns still work for State Attorney Patricia Jessamy? She shouldn’t!
I cant believe that Margaret Burns would go to say something as far as that Zach Sowers looked like a sleeping baby……..he was beaten to death for Christ’s sake! Im sure due to the extent of his injuries he was on many painkillers but to come out and say something so ignorent and disregarding to a widow’s feelings is absurd. Even if he did get hit and fall he was still a MUGGING VICTIM! IT IS STILL A CRIME! I think Ms. Burns needs to figure out what side she’s working on; the side of four young, ignorent degenerate assholes or the good side.
Margaret Burns is a joke, just like the woman she works for. She is an an embarassment to the city. I do not know Ana or the family personally, but have a ton of sympathy and respect for them and what they have gone thru. It is clear to me that Mrs. Burns does not care about the city and the residents and is part of the problem.

I suspect if this was someone in her family, her attitude would be quite different. She has done a great disservice to the city of Baltimore by speaking such nonsense. Once again, I’m disgusted by the actions of those who represent the legal system in this city. If you’re a criminal, congratulations! You can do whatever you want. Even kill a man. Those who enable the acceptance of murder in Baltimore are equally as guilty as those who physically do the killing.
Memo to Margaret Burns: Stop digging!
Margaret Burns and Patricia Jessamy are part of what’s WRONG with Baltimore City. They are not on the side of good, of justice. Their office repeatedly chooses the path of least resistance with little regard to improving the city, removing the offenders from the streets, supporting the victims of crime… it’s a disgrace. They both need to be removed from their jobs. We need a prosecutor with a backbone and a heart. I am absolutely disgusted.
What happened to Zach and Anna could happen to anyone, and I think of them often. I expect city officials to work to end these senseless acts, and by letting those monsters off with so little jail time it tells them that it’s ok to murder someone for a watch and some dvds. It’s not. It never has been and it never will be. Zach was murdered and it’s about time the prosecutor told the truth.

I am embarraced for us and our city by the comments made by Margaret Burns in this article. It is unbelievable how she could be so insensitive and unfeeling and obviously clueless. Hadn’t Zach and his family been thru enough without feeling the need to have an autopsy performed to know what the causes were?? Absurd! I’m not excusing some voters’ ignorance, but it doesn’t help when the party bosses (I’m looking at you George Della!) have their minions hand out “sample ballots” on Primary Day with the names of their preferred candidates highlighted in bold face type. Steve Fogleman was a victim of this BS when he ran against Pat Jessamy in the 2006 Democratic Primary.
Well it’s really no wonder Balitmore has the crime it does when those who are in charge of protecting it and bringing those responisble to justice can’t seem to do their job. A sleeping baby usually represents peacefulness and when Zach was brought in to the ER, he was anything but. Comparing a beating victim to a sleeping baby is downright offensive and I can only hope Margaret Burns develops the decency to retract her harsh words.

I volunteered for Fogleman in 2006, and I will do it again in 2010. Pat Jessamy has got to go. She stood by Burns when it was proven that Burns spends most of her time trying to discredit police. She now stands by Burns when Burns pees on the victims. Anyone who votes for Pat Jessamy ever again is a criminal or an idiot.

This letter is for both Ms. Patricia Jessamy and Ms. Margaret Burns……
Indeed! a very highly selfish comment and unprofessional way to handle a situation such as this which is truly a tragedy! Is this how you both conduct yourselves, and deal with these types of situations to the citizens of Baltimore and the rest of the state of Maryland? Is this what you were taught in School? If so; and it is quite obvious; that you should both be very ashamed of yourselves! Of all the degrees of learning and schooling you went through to reach your profession and career, you certainly have failed as to how to be considerate, and act in a courteous way to people. You show a lack of love, and manners, and have misbehaved in a very cruel way! The thoughtless acts the both of you displayed to the young Widow Mrs. Anna Sowers and her husband Zach whom she lost in the horrific violent crime that was committed! I am a full-time homemaker, I have been married for close to 33 years, I raised two children, one of them went to school with Anna & Zach, and the other is very happily married with two children. I help my family and take care of my Grandchildren. What does this have to do with this situation? It has a lot to do with it! You see; though I received “just” a High School Education, The only career I have is being a loving and devoted wife, mother, and Grandmother. I raised my family to be kind, loving, and courteous, and taught them how to be dignified around other people, and show deep respect and empathy to others which is something you lacked when you received your diploma in higher education. You failed, what you learned because you did not behave in a professional manner. Or maybe you just weren’t taught to be proper in a dignified way in the very first place when you were growing up. Is this how your parents trained you? if so, then shame on them too! Since when do you know how a baby sleeps? After raising my family and caring for my two small Grand Children, I hardly think; No excuse me…..I know that my babies would never sleep soundly if they were bloodied and bruised! So what makes you think that Zach Sowers slept soundly like a baby after having his head slammed to the curb a few times, and beaten to a pulp left for dead? If either one of you have family; then I feel very bad for your family members because this I consider you as being abusive people, to think that a baby can sleep soundly after being hurt! If a baby cries when he or she is teething, they certainly are going to cry if they are seriously injured! I have a very hard time fathoming your way of thinking and the comment you made Ms. Margaret Burns to say that Zach slept soundly like a baby. Would you or your family members sleep soundly after being abused? I hardly think so! And for this; you should be held accountable for the comments that you made to the entire Zach Sowers family!

I moved OUT of Baltimore because of the crime and it discusts me to see that after something so tragic like this has happened, the city is STILL making NO effort to make the crime situation better. the problem is with the people that run the city. MOVE OUT as soon as you can! It’s only going to get worse….
I am dumbfounded by the comments made by Margaret Burns. Zach was beaten so badly that his own wife didn’t recognize him at first - what would Ms. Burns say to that, that perhaps Anna had never seen him asleep before? This is ridiculous and disgusting. I think it’s horrible that Zach’s attackers didn’t face murder charges (or even a jury), and will be out on the street in a matter of years. Burns can only pray that their next victim isn’t one of her loved ones.
I am a former neighbor of Anna and Zach. I lived right next door to them. I sold my home in December of 2005, to finally be out of this horrendous city.
Zach and Anna were two of the nicest people you could ever meet. They were just your average young professionals trying to make a good life for themselves. They, myself and so many like us are the epitomy of what this city needs and what this city wants, yet the city seems to be doing everything it can to get us to leave and keep us away.
When I first heard of what happend, my heart dropped. I just couldn’t believe that something this evil could happen to such good people. If you have ever seen Zach, you would know what non-threatening of a person he was. To say the things that Burns has said about Zach makes her just as ignorant and dispicable as the thugs her office “prosecuted” (and I say “prosecuted” lightly!)
I think of Zach and Anna very often and my thoughts and prayers are with them both, their families and friends. What they have had to endure no one should ever have to go through. Did you think about that Ms. Burns when your mouth started spewing such awfulness?
It is people like Burns and Jessamy that make Baltimore the disgusting city I now think it is. I know that Anna would like a public apology, but I don’t even think that would undo the unecessary hurt she has caused this already hurting family. Anything less than a resignation won’t do here, in my opinion.
I read in The Sun that Jessamy is complaining about getting hate mail. Then maybe you should keep that mouth on your spokeperson closed. The both of you are a disgrace to the city and to the memory of Zach.

Truly disturbing comments by Maragaret Burns. I am totally lost why she would say them, even if they were true. It serves no point but to defend ruthless criminals. You would think that a ’spokesman’ would have the sense. disgusting.

If I ever get attacked I will make sure I ask them to make sure I lay down first so I down so I don’t sustain any injuries on the way down to the ground. Because from the way it sounds they shouldn’t be charged with that in the city of Baltimore. You are the reason these people are on the streets, you should be ashamed of yourself. You should be punished by spending a month on the streets of Baltimore every night to see what happens. Zach is not here today because of those thugs, no matter how you slice it. Our justice system is in pieces, now we all know why, thanks for clearing it up for us.
Seems like Ms Burns must be sampling some of the local street drugs after giving comments like that. The reporter Melody Simmons stands behind her reporting and I doubt she is lying. Kind of hard to make up a comment “like a sleeping baby”.
It is a truly sad day when people who are ELECTED to protect the citizens of Baltimore ridicule and attack the wife of the victim. With so many people working to try and get Baltimore to turn the corner, its statements like that by Ms. Burns that set things back.
One hopes that Ms. Burns does the right thing and make a public apology and retract her statements. Perhaps someday the citizens of B-More will elect officials that truly represent them.

When you are an elected public figure, you can not speak so carelessly. This is someone’s life and eventual death she is so crassly speaking of. How dare she! In her grossly belated apology letter to Anna, she dwells on the need for the letter to be private. She is the “Spokeswoman for the State’s Attorney’s Office in Baltimore” a VERY PUBLIC role and this event only demonstrates what IDIOTS are running the show…she wants to speak of compassion and sympathy…i only hope she never has to experience what Anna, and the family and friends of Zach have had to experience.

If you think that the citizens of Baltimore are stupid, then guess again! No one is that stupid! And Ms. Burns you mean to tell me you don’t understand what it is that Ms. Sowers wants from you? You don’t understand the word; “retraction?” Oh Come Now!!! One who has worked so hard to receive higher Education and the status you are in professionally in your career and all! You lack the ability of knowing what it is to be humble and show humility! What’s the matter with the both of you? You can’t say a simple; I’m sorry” to Ms. Anna Sowers and her entire family? How do you expect others in the city of Baltimore and other places, to trust and look up to you? And Ms. Burns; though you spoke to Ms. Sowers over the phone and expressed an apology to her and also in a written letter maybe fine, but if it’s not good enough for the Widow, then why not please her and just humble yourselves by doing as she has requested and apologize publicly? If in fact; you really do feel and think that you are in no way guilty of such comments that you have been accused of saying to the reporter; Ms. Melody Simmons, then you should at least humble yourselves and apologize anyway because it’s a misunderstanding! Don’t shoot the messenger! After reading the article numerous times it is very evident what Ms. Burns was suggesting was not that the victim of the crime was responsible, but that the legal system itself is the criminal. In order to obtain any conviction, even in a case as clear as this one, the prosecution needs clear evidence. You are correct, “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” however the point again is, in our legal system a prosecutor MUST do everything to solidify a case, to prevent a criminal from walking away free. Burn’s statement has been taken completely out of context by the media for pure sensationalism.
Very late as far as a response goes… Just wanted to throw in my opinion… I was there, in the ER, taking care of him in the trauma room the entire time he was down there… Anyone who could possibly say what I witnessed was not the result of a horrific homicidal beating is frankly absurd. To downplay one of the WORST instances of violence I have seen in this city in the 2 years I have worked in the ER is an insult and IRRESPONSIBLE. The only concern I have is who is at fault, Burns or the reporter for taking things out of context… regardless… ridiculous.
My thoughts have been with all involved since the second I saw him roll through the door, and honestly… they always will be.
First how do we get Jessamy and Burns out of there jobs? Second, I hate to say this but… If the victim were black it would have ended very differently. they would have had the NAACP and jesse jackson and al sharpton in baltimore looking for and prosecuting the four white kids who did this horrible crime. But the whites in the city do not have BIG voices to fight for them because the whites had slaves and they are suppossed to pay for that bullshit for the rest of their lives even though it was abolished over 100 YEARS AGO. Just a simple point. Sorry ANA!!!
How is this different than any of the other 281 murders last year?
