For the record

A woman who left a phone message but not her name or number complained about the cover of the July issue of Exhibit A. (We’re glad to get calls with suggestions and constructive criticism.)

The caller said that using a photo of an African-American man to accompany a story about local gangs is inappropriate. She said most gang members in the Baltimore area aren’t African-Americans.

She might be correct about gang membership. People of all races belong to Baltimore-area gangs. We don’t have a breakdown of members by ethnic group.

But we don’t have a cover with a man of African descent on it, either. In fact, we were careful to use a version of the photo that we hoped would not make the man’s skin appear darker than it is.

Just so everyone knows.
