Everyone counts

July 30, 2008

Baltimore police are investigating a rash of strangling deaths of women, several of whom have a history of prostitution. Now there are reports in The Examiner that the killings of three more prostitutes in the last five years remain unsolved.

In the crime novel “The Last Coyote” by Michael Connelly, the main character, homicide detective Harry Bosch, lives by a simple motto: “Everyone counts.” What he means by that is that every homicide victim, no matter their background or social status, deserves a full investigation and, ultimately, justice for the killer. He believes that so strongly because his mother, a prostitute, was brutally murdered when he was 12 and the case went unsolved for 30 years until Bosch decided to tackle it himself.

Harry Bosch’s motto comes to mind as we read about the killings of these Baltimore women with links to prostitution. We urge the police to pursue these killings with all the vigilance they can muster.

Each and every homicide in Baltimore is a tragedy for the people involved and a wound to the city’s psyche. Each death diminishes us all. Everyone counts.
