In Maryland, there are 12 jurors in criminal cases in the state court system. The defendant (but not the prosecution) has an absolute right to a jury trial in (1) all cases in the Circuit Court if the charge carries potential incarceration, and (2) any case in the District Court in which any charge carries potential incarceration of more than 90 days (the case is then transferred to the Circuit Court). Fourth ID theft conspirator gets sentenced to prison

The last of four Baltimore residents in an identity theft ring has been sentenced to 65 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. Bank’s ex-teller charged in $1 million fraud pleads guilty

A former bank teller has pleaded guilty to stealing at least $400,000 from her employer, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office says she took more than $1 million. The amount taken will be determined at Karen L. Baer’s sentencing hearing Oct. 3. According to her plea deal, Baer worked at PNC bank or its predecessors, Westminster Union Bank and Mercantile Bank, from 1998 to October 2007. Md. man admits keeping teen girl as family’s slave

Almost 150 years after the Civil War, slavery still exists in Maryland. In Montgomery County, a man has pleaded guilty to holding a Nigerian teenager as a slave for five years. George Udeozor, 52, formerly of Darnestown, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
