Harnessing Stooge-law power

August 4, 2008

My family had a poodle named Curly when I was younger. While her fur did curl a bit, my dad actually named her after Curly Howard from The Three Stooges.

Needless to say, my brother and I were quickly indoctrinated to the world of Moe, Larry, Curly and occasionally Shemp. Even now, I go crazy at the smell of “Wild Hyacinth,” perform in an original two-man quartet and can easily identify Shmowland on a map. (Bonus points to anyone who can correctly identify the leader of Shmowland and what priceless jewel he possesses.)

So I was happy to learn Deweycheatumnhowe won the prestigious Hambletonian this weekend in New Jersey, the most prestigious event in harness racing. Deweycheatumnhowe, ostensibly named after the Stooges law firm (which, by the way, predates the Car Talk guys’ by a few decades) went off as almost an even-money favorite and won by a half-length over Crazed to claim the $1.5 million prize.

The win marked the horse’s 15th consecutive to start his career, and he became the first undefeated horse to win the Hambletonian. His record is in stark contrast to his namesake, which lost every case it ever took.
