OAKLAND, Md. - The Garrett County commissioners have halted plans for a new county detention center.

Commission Chairman Denny Glotfelty says the county doesn’t have the money to cover the costs. He says, however, the county will study possible upgrades for the existing jail.

The detention center had been proposed as part of a Public Safety Center in Oakland that also would have housed offices for the sheriff.

Meanwhile, Glotfelty says the commissioners have decided to move forward with a plans for the Community Athletic Recreational Center at Garrett College. Officials say more than $1.6 million has already been spent for preliminary work for the athletic center, compared to about $590,000 spent for preliminary work for the Public Safety Center.
