Trial begins in fatal shooting of Baltimore officer

A former girlfriend says she saw a Baltimore man playing with a 9 millimeter handgun moments before he allegedly killed an off-duty police officer.
Kelly Carter testified Monday that Brandon Grimes stepped out of their vehicle, then walked around the corner onto Fairfax Road. That’s when she heard gunfire and found Grimes with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Prosecutors say Grimes was wounded by return fire as he tried to rob, then shot, Detective Troy Chesley. Chesley was gunned down Jan. 9, 2007, outside his apartment in the 4500 block of Fairfax Road.
Chesley was dressed in plain clothes and authorities say it’s unlikely that Grimes knew he was a police officer.
Grimes’ attorney Roland Walker told jurors someone else likely shot both men.
