Prosecutor pursues local hero for marijuana

August 27, 2008

Ranger Bob might lose his farm.

Harford County State’s Attorney Joseph I. Cassilly says it’s the duty of police and prosecutors to treat Bob Chance, 62, a longtime teacher, environmental activist, former Bel Air town commissioner and now a Christmas tree grower, like any other drug offender. So, they’ve charged him with intent to distribute marijuana and plan to seize his tree farm.

No one says that Chance, beloved after years of running nature camps for children and appearing on TV’s “Romper Room” as Ranger Bob, actually sells pot. But police say they found it growing on his farm and stored in his freezer.

“He’s just a great, community-minded guy,” says Terence O. Hanley, a town commissioner and former mayor. “His volunteerism here in Harford County has been invaluable.”

Chance denies all charges, including possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
