Used car dealer sent to prison for drug dealing, faces deportation to Jamaica
August 27, 2008
A Jamaican national who listed himself as director of Charm City Motors was sentenced to almost 11 years in federal prison, with deportation likely to follow, for conspiring to deal cocaine and money laundering.
Harrington Campbell, 34, said during his trial last month that he quit dealing drugs years ago, that his longtime business partner and former Northwestern High classmate tried to have him killed, and that a key witness against him lied. The witness was stabbed recently while serving a 12-year prison sentence.
According to evidence at the trial, Campbell:
- bought cocaine in Texas and California from 1997 to 2002 to sell in Baltimore.
- put fake liens on cars sold to drug dealers in case authorities seized the cars.
- structured large deposits in personal and Charm City Motors bank accounts to avoid IRS detection.
