Man arrested for taking newspaper from recycling bin

A 76-year-old British man has been arrested after he dropped off a dozen newspapers in a recycling bin, then changed his mind and retrieved one of them.

Denis O’Keefe was confronted by two police officers who told him it was illegal to remove a newspaper once it was deposited in the bin. When O’Keefe insisted he hadn’t broken the law, the officers called for back-up, then handcuffed him over the hood of his car, leaving him with bloody wrists. They processed the arrest even though O’Keefe began suffering an asthma attack.

“If I mugged an old lady I would expect everything I got,” O’Keefe commented, “but I did nothing wrong. They didn’t even say I had stolen the paper.”
