Twenty-nine-year-old Sherri Schmidt says in court documents she had an affair with 28-year-old officer Colby Covell, and she claims he became jealous about her correspondence with a pen pal.

Schmidt alleges Covell assaulted her in her cell on July 17. Schmidt sought the charges after the state’s attorney’s office declined to prosecute.

The (Frederick) News-Post could not reach Covell for comment.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s office says its internal affairs and criminal investigations sections investigated the allegation. The office says Covell was fired Aug. 7 for inappropriate contact with an inmate.
