A Maryland doctor is facing a federal malpractice lawsuit from a patient who claims the doctor accidentally stapled his rectum closed, preventing him from going to the bathroom for 17 days.
Ronald Watkins, 64, of West Virginia, is suing Frederick County surgeon Manuel Casiano over a 2004 operation. “The reason for suing Dr. Casiano is very simple: His rectum was stapled shut,” Watkins’ attorney, Julia Lodowski, told the jury in Baltimore.
Watkins claims Casiano’s mistake caused him unnecessary additional surgeries, continuing rectal problems and an inability to pass gas.
Casiano says the problem was not a staple but simply that Watkins’ butt became swollen due to other medical problems.
