The Allegany County state’s attorney says he is seeking the death penalty for a state prison inmate charged with murdering his cellmate at the Western Correctional Institution near Cumberland.
State’s Attorney Michael Twigg said Tuesday has filed notice of intent to seek the death penalty against 36-year-old Alonzo Johnson III.
Johnson is accused of strangling 23-year-old Mark Capano, who was found dead in their cell at the maximum-security prison March 28.
Johnson is serving a life sentence for sex offense convictions in Prince George’s County.
Capano was serving a 14-year sentence for a second-degree murder conviction in Cecil County.
