A convicted murderer who escaped a western Maryland prison has been charged in a burglary at a Boonsboro home during the five days he was on the loose.
Authorities say 23-year-old Kandelario Garcia-Ramos, who escaped from Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown on Jan. 17, broke into a home three miles from the prison while the residents spent a weekend in Florida.
John and Sharon Shank came home to discover jewelry and other items missing, ransacked rooms and items that did not belong to them.
Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Beckley wrote in charging documents that Garcia-Ramos had a camera with pictures of the Shank family and himself in its memory.
Garcia-Ramos is charged with first- and fourth degree burglary and theft of more than $500.
