Md. effort to overturn speed cameras fails

Organizers of an effort overturn a new speed camera law in Maryland before it takes effect this fall say they failed to gather enough signatures to continue their effort.

The group, Maryland for Responsible Enforcement, sought to gather about 53,000 signatures to make the law subject to a referendum.

The group needed to submit one-third of those signatures by midnight Sunday, but organizer Daniel Zubairi says his group fell about 1,600 signatures short.

The law allowing speed cameras in highway work and school zones takes effect in October.

Drivers caught traveling at least 12 mph over the posted speed limit can expect a ticket of up to $40.

Zubairi says supporters may pursue the issue as a local referendum on next year’s ballot.
