Federal detainees could move to Baltimore prison

Maryland and federal officials are working on a plan to house hundreds of the state’s federal detainees in the former Supermax prison in Baltimore.

Currently, inmates awaiting trial in federal court in Baltimore are spread out among two dozen facilities in several states, including Ohio.

The plan developed by Federal Detention Trustee Stacia Hylton and Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Gary Maynard would bring up to 600 detainees to Baltimore within three years.

The plan calls for upgrades to the Supermax, now known as the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center. About 150 state convicts, including Maryland’s five death row inmates, are currently housed at the prison. They would move elsewhere.

Maynard says the plan is contingent on federal funds coming through in the next fiscal year.
